Domestic Turbulence in Ethiopia Takes New Turn

January 27, 2006 (andnetwork.com) - While student protests continued in most parts of Ethiopia, the city of Addis Ababa was recently disturbed with bombings

An explosion in the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia around the Lideta area destroyed the bank and the nearby Assab Hotel. Another bomb exploded in the vicinities of Black Lion Medical School, inflicting considerable damages to the dormitory and cafeteria of the school. Reports said that a branch of the Commercial Bank in the Teklehaimanot Area also suffered a bomb attack.

Frightened by the explosions in various institutions, the TPLF regime has deployed soldiers armed with heavy artillery to guard the Commercial Bank in Hayahulet Mazoria. Sources indicated that the regime moved about 3 billion Birr in trucks to undisclosed locations, and that two bombs exploded during the operation.

In similar news, the TPLF regime is threatening employees of the Business Construction Bank in Legehar Sengatera area, where recently 1.4 million Birr was reportedly stolen.

Meanwhile, TPLF authorities expelled Anthony Mitchell, Associated Press correspondent in Ethiopia for “tarnishing the image of the nation, repeatedly contravening journalism ethics.” With various international reporters leaving Ethiopia, a near total news blackout is prevailing in the country.
